The Museum Ship Pommern
Mariehamn’s Western Harbour is dominated by the imposing Pommern – one of the last great windjammers in the world and the only four-masted barque still in her original condition. Next to Pommern stands the Maritime museum, where you can learn more about the maritime history of Åland.
Kastelholm Castle
The historic Kastelholm Castle stands in Sund, northeast of Marieham. It was built in the 13th century to consolidate the power of the Swedish king. The nearby ruins of the Bomarsund fortress remind visitors of the Crimean War (known in Finnish as ’the Åland War’), which has been made into a Finnish song.
Grey granite churches
The churches on Åland are among the oldest in Finland, many dating back to the 12th and 13th century. The name ’grey granite churches’ is derived from the natural granite used as building material.
Come and see one of Åland’s strangest monuments!
The Bomarsund fortress was built between 1832 and 1854. At that time, Åland was part of Russia and the fortress was built for Russian troops to be stationed in the province. Designed to house 5,000 soldiers, the construction project was enormous in local terms. The fortress had a major impact on the local society and even today the period is known as the ‘Bomarsund Era’. The Bomarsund museum is located in the pilot cottage of Prästö.
