Tartu - the cradle of culture

Tartu is the second largest city in Estonia. Perhaps because of its location inland it is not so known amongst foreigners and cruise visitors. Tartu has the country's oldest university. It was established already in year 1632 be the Swedish king Gustaf II Adolf who even today (as a statue) oversees his creation. The students bring along happy and lively atmosphere to the city.

The Atlantis restaurant on the bank of river Ema is a good place to follow river life and enjoy a glass of chilled Chablis. You can also find somelovely restaurants around the town hall square.

Behind the university there is the green English-style park of Toomemägi. Go and find the Angel's Bridge and Devil's Bridge, in your opinion, which one is more beautiful? Visit and photograph the statue of two Vildes. It commemorates the memory of Estonian novel litterature master Eduard Vilde and the Irish writer Oscar Wilde.

The child minded are surely fascinated by Tartu Toy Museum. Dolls and other toys, old postcards and children books might lead you to long for the good old days in this modern Playstation era. A whole another story is the KGB Cells Museum. This place called The Gray House was in 1940 and 1950's the headquarters of the feared KGB in Southern Estonia. In the Brewery Museum's malt tower you can make precise empirical tests whether A. Le Coq beats Saku or Pärnu beer.
