Transport of dangerous goods
Dangerous goods are substances or articles that can cause damage to people, animals, the environment or materials. Based on its properties, the substance or article is assigned a Dangerous Goods class. UN regulations list 9 different classes of dangerous goods. Based on the substance/articles properties, it can also be assigned a subsidiary risk. When loading dangerous goods, one should always take any subsidiary risk and special instructions into considerations.
The transport of dangerous goods is regulated by both national and international legislation as follows:
Maritime transports: IMDG (IMDG-Code Amdt. 35-10)
Road transports: ADR (VAK) (ADR 2011)
Tallink Silja Oy observes the latest versions of the above-mentioned regulations.
Shipping of dangerous goods
The transport of dangerous goods is primarily done in accordance with the IMDG-code. On our ship ms Sea Wind (Stockholm-Turku) we can also offer transports carried out in accordance with the ADR/RID regulations. On the other lines only dangerous cargo units that meet IMDG requirements can be transported. Notice that to Tallinn Harbour it is not possible to transport class 1 dangerous goods.
Reservations
Reservations for a vehicle loaded with dangerous goods must be made with Tallink Silja Cargo Booking well in advance. When making the reservations, the Proper Shipping Name, UN number, Class, subsidiary risk (if applicable) and packaging group of the goods being shipped must be given. The consigner must also notify whether the goods being transported are in Limited Quantities.
Documentation
A DG-declaration should be issued on a separate document Multimodal Dangerous Goods Declar. (pdf) /Dangerous Goods Declaration (pdf), which is to be signed and send to the Cargo Booking (cargo.booking@tallinksilja.com, fax +358 (0)9 180 4602) before the shipment. The document is to be shown at the cargo clearance before boarding the ship. On request the original version of the DGD is to be shown. ADR transports shall besides the road-regulations hold a packing certificate container/vehicle Packing Certificate Form (pdf).
Marking of vehicle/cargo unit
The transporter/consignor shall ensure that the vehicle/cargo unit being shipped is marked in accordance with the applicable legislation for the sailing in question. Even vehicles/cargo units loaded with limited quantities and exempted quantities (ADR 1.1.3) must be marked during the sailing.
Storage of dangerous goods
Dangerous goods may not be stored within the Tallink Silja port area. Vehicles/cargo units must be picked up/dropped off at the port on the same morning/evening that the shipment is to take place. If necessary, our competent personnel at Cargo Booking and at the check-in in ports can provide additional information on the transport of classified goods. Markings required by the IMDG and ADR are available for purchase at the port check-in. |
