Our commitment for your wellbeing
Many of our ships have operated as cargo ships despite the coronavirus pandemic. Various practices and concrete measures have been done on board these ships to ensure we minimize the risks and provide everyone comfortable and safe environment for travelling. In the past recent months, we at Tallink Silja have been preparing for the return of passengers and we will gradually resume services as safely as possible considering health as a priority.
Safety measures on board our ships
The overall cleaning process was intensified even before the actual outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic due to the normal influenza season. Intensified cleaning and disinfection has been continuing and, in particular, surfaces that are frequently touched by passengers are being cleaned more thoroughly and more frequently. These surfaces are for instance stair railings, elevator knobs and door handles.
A considerable number of disinfectant dispensers have been placed to the public spaces inside the ships, and those are freely available for all passengers and crew.
The importance of washing hands should not be forgotten and therefore handwashing stations in public toilets are easily accessible. In addition, where possible, extra handwashing stations have been built, such as in front of the Baltic Princess’s Fastlane restaurant. Automated hand-drying machines have been removed or disabled inside the public toilets on board.
The passenger capacity of operating vessels during the first month, and depending on the epidemic situation, shall not exceed more than a half of the normal maximum number of passenger capacity. In this way, we are able to guarantee enough space for each passenger, and the distance to other passengers can be maintained more easily.
There are also limitations for the number of customers inside stores and restaurants. Customer service points have protective plexiglass shields in the same way as many on-shore stores. In addition, for example, on board Helsinki-Tallinn route’s Shuttles, staff currently uses protective facemasks.
Procedures are starting already at the terminal
The sea journey always starts from the terminal. Information has been increased at terminals in our various destinations to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The information in terminals remind you to keep your distance from fellow passengers, gives instructions for respiratory and hand hygiene. There are also disinfectant dispensers and public toilets for washing hands.
Various posters, signs and screens help the passenger to follow guidelines. The material has been produced in several different languages.
The waiting and queuing areas in the terminals are marked so that a sufficient safety distance to other people can be maintained. Staff instructs and help people to keep safe distance to other passengers. If necessary, passengers can be invited to the terminal in different times and boarding can be done in stages to avoid a crowd.
Before doing the check-in, passenger must confirm that he or she and possible fellow travellers in the same booking know that it is forbidden to travel if there are any symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, runny nose or shortness of breath). .
Everyone needs to take responsibility of own actions
Everyone can slow down the spread of the coronavirus by their own actions. When you are sick or symptomatic, you definitely need to stay at home. It is the responsibility of each person to take care of their own hand washing hygiene in order to prevent the spread of the virus. Proper hand washing with soap and precise drying of hands are the key actions.
Please take care to keep your distance from other passengers and crew members. Avoid crowds and keep 1-2 meter distance from fellow human beings.

We plan gradually resuming passenger traffic in cooperation with the authorities, ports and other partners. We will continue to maintain various measures and implement more if needed according to the situation. The passenger volumes will not return back as they used to be for a long time, but step by step we will move forward towards the new normal.

Remember at least these instructions:
- Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you cannot wash your hands.
- Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth unless you have just washed your hands.
- Cough and sneeze into a disposable handkerchief and place the handkerchief in to a trash immediately. If you do not have a handkerchief, cough, or sneeze on your sleeve - never to your hands.
